Is Roland T-8 worth it? ›

I see this as an entry-level drum machine for budding producers to see if the analog gear is right for them. And in that regard, this thing is insanely awesome. It has just enough features to tease you into diving headfirst into more premium drum machines and makes the analog world even more accessible and exciting.

NOTE: If you want to swap out the instrument sound on either the TOM or CLAP tracks, press MENU, turn the VALUE knob to TOM or CLAP, and press Enter to change the sound. There's an alternate tom on the TOM track and a choice of either a noise tom or a high tom on the CLAP track.

The T-8 delivers an authentic TB-303 bass experience, including the tactile power to squeeze, squelch, and mangle sounds in the moment. Record notes, accents, and slides with traditional step-based input, or play in parts live with the bottom-row buttons or an external MIDI keyboard.

An actual hardware version 808 is rare, with only 12,000 having been manufactured over the span of three years until production was ceased in 1983, according to the Guardian.

Like the TR‑8, each drum track has dedicated controls for Pitch and Decay. The TR‑8S adds a third knob row called Ctrl that can be assigned to different parameters on each 'Instrument' (track). Typically this will control a unique sound-shaping target appropriate to the equivalent voice on an original X0X machine.
