Kabuki Makeup

Kyoto, Japan

Kabuki, a traditional Japanese theater form, emerged during the early 17th century and has a colorful history. Originating as a type of dance performance, it quickly gained popularity among the common people and faced criticism from the authorities due to its provocative nature. Over time, Kabuki transformed into a stylized theater art featuring elaborate costumes, dramatic makeup, and dynamic performances. Despite periods of prohibition and regulation, Kabuki has persevered, reflecting societal changes and evolving into a cherished cultural treasure that continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of drama, music, and dance.

One of the distinctive features of Kabuki is the use of intricate face paint called ‘kumadori’ (a makeup applied to villains and heroes). Actors apply this white base makeup to their faces, which is then accentuated with bold colors and patterns to represent different character types and emotions. The vibrant and expressive kumadori makeup enhances the performers’ facial expressions and helps to visually convey the essence of the characters. Kabuki makeup paints and displays characters’ traits directly on the mask. Colored lines highlight features and express character traits: red for passion and anger, blue for sadness or evil. Patterns vary by gender, while supernatural beings boast intense makeup. And actors are also known to apply their own touches to the makeup to add more depth and expression to their character.

Hanuman Mask – Kecak Dance

Bali, Indonesia

The history of the Kecak dance can be traced back to the 1930s when it was developed as a collaborative effort between a Balinese artist, I Wayan Limbak, and the German painter and musician Walter Spies. Inspired by traditional trance rituals and the Ramayana epic, they created a new form of dance that incorporated elements of music, drama, and movement.

The Kecak dance is a vibrant Balinese performance known for its rhythmic chanting and storytelling blending traditional trance rituals and stories from the Ramayana epic. In the early years of its development, the Kecak dance did not feature masks. However, over time, certain variations of the dance began to incorporate masks to represent specific characters from the Ramayana, such as Rama, Sita, or the demon king Ravana. These masks are intricately carved and painted by skilled artisans, crafted to embody the essence and characteristics of the respective characters. These masks add depth and visual appeal to the performance. The Kecak dance, with or without masks, showcases the artistic creativity of Bali and captivates audiences with its synchronized movements, evocative chanting, and immersive storytelling.
